Voltage and Resistance Thresholds

Fluke Battery Analyzers allow you to quickly and easily define upper and lower measurement thresholds or tolerance ranges. During the testing process, measured values are automatically compared to the predefined threshold levels producing a PASS, FAIL or WARN indication after each measurement. A maximum of 10 sets of thresholds can be stored and threshold indications are determined based on the following criterion:

Stakeless Testing

The Fluke 1625-2 earth ground tester is able to measure earth ground loop resistances using only clamps. With this test method, two clamps are placed around the earth ground rod and each are connected to the tester. No earth ground stakes are used at all. A known, fixed voltage is induced by one clamp and the current is measured using the second clamp. Then the tester automatically determines the resistance of the earth ground rod. This test method only works if a bonded earth ground system exists for the building or structure under test, but most are. If there is only one path to ground, like at many residential applications, the Stakeless method will not provide an acceptable value and the Fall of Potential test method must be used.

With Stakeless testing, the earth ground rod does not need to be disconnected - leaving the bonded earth ground system intact during test. Gone are the days of spending time placing and connecting stakes for each earth ground rod on your system - a major time saver. You can also perform earth ground tests in places you’ve not considered before: inside buildings, power pylons, or anywhere you don’t have access to soil.

The Fluke 1625-2 is a unique earth ground tester that can performs all four types of earth ground measurement:

The clamp-on ground testing technique used by the Fluke 1630 simplifies ground loop testing and enables non-intrusive leakage current measurement. The compact and rugged design makes the Fluke 1630 easy to use in small places and harsh environments, while the ‘display hold’ and the continuity testing with an audible alarm function ensures convenience in use. The novel technique means that earth ground loop testing and continuity testing can be completed without breaking the circuit.

Stakeless testing system

The Fluke 1630 uses the Stakeless testing method, which eliminates the need to disconnect parallel ground rods and find suitable locations for placing auxiliary ground stakes. This saves time and enables users such as industrial and utility electricians, and field service electricians and contractors, to perform earth ground loop tests in locations where it is not possible to use other techniques, including inside buildings or on power pylons. With the Stakeless testing method, earth ground stakes are no longer necessary. The Fluke 1630 Earth Ground Clamp is placed around the earth ground rod or the connecting cable. A known voltage is induced by one half of the clamp and the current is measured by the other half. The tester automatically determines the ground loop resistance at this grounding connection.

Fluke 438-II Power Quality and Motor Analyzer

The new Fluke 438-II Power Quality and Motor Analyzer adds key mechanical measurement capabilities for electric motors to the advanced power quality analysis functions of the Fluke 430 Series II Power Quality Analyzers. Quickly and easily measure and analyze key electrical and mechanical performance parameters such as power, harmonics, unbalance, motor speed, torque and mechanical power without the need of mechanical sensors. How it works

Using proprietary algorithms, the Fluke 438-II Power Quality and Motor Analyzer uses three-phase current and voltage waveforms to calculate motor torque, speed, load and efficiency at a 1 second update rate. The motor air gap field, as observed via the voltage/current waveforms, provides the basis for the measurements. Mechanical sensors and intrusive no-load motor testing are not required, making it faster than ever to analyze overall electric motor performance.

Motor Types

The Fluke 438-II can analyze both direct-on-line motors and motors powered by variable frequency drive (VFD) systems. The VFD must be a voltage controlled system (VSI) with a voltage / frequency range of 40 to 70Hz, and a carrier range of 2.5kHz to 20kHz.

Electrical motor analysis

The Fluke 438-II provides a complete breakdown of electrical parameters. Prior to beginning motor analysis, it's recommended to make base line power quality measurements to assess the state of harmonics and unbalance on the electrical service output as these two properties can have a serious negative impact, on motor performance.

When in Motor Analysis mode, results are summarized for electrical performance, mechanical performance and derating (according to NEMA recommendations).

The easy to understand four-level color severity scale indicates motor performance in relation to the recommended electrical parameter levels including rated power, power factor, unbalance and harmonics.

For mechanical power you can instantly view the mechanical output power along with motor torque and speed. The mechanical output power is instantly compared with electrical power to provide you with live efficiency measurements. With this feature you can easily measure machine performance during each operation cycle.

The NEMA derating screen is updated as the load and the electrical conditions change, and each new measurement is plotted on the tolerance graph as a "+". In this example we can see that motor is within tolerance but is close to the service factor. This indicates that there may be a need for power quality mitigation, motor maintenance or some other performance improving adjustment. By frequently performing these tests over time, known benchmarks and performance trends can be created, enabling informed maintenance investment decisions.

What is Crest Factor+?

Crest Factor+ is a new proprietary algorithm (or technology) that takes the confusion out of bearing assessment. The original Crest Factor is used by vibration analysts to identify bearing faults. It is defined as the ratio of the peak value/RMS value of a time domain vibration signal.

A key limitation of the original Crest Factor algorithm is that it does not increase linearly as the bearing degrades, making it very difficult to determine the severity of mechanical issues. In fact, the Crest Factor can actually decrease as a bearing nears catastrophic failure due to large RMS values.

In order to overcome this limitation, Fluke uses a proprietary algorithm known as Crest Factor+ (CF+). CF+ values range from 1 to 16. As the bearing condition worsens, the CF+ value increases, ensuring the user is easily able to recognize the severity of the problem. To make things even simpler, Fluke has also included a four-level severity scale that identifies the bearing health as Good, Satisfactory, Unsatisfactory or Unacceptable.

In addition, the LED stroboscope can be used as a strobe tachometer to measure speed instead of using a laser tachometer. In order to use the stroboscope, the component under measure must be visible, and have an identifying mark that can be used as a point of reference. A strobe tachometer is a useful tool because you can't always get access to the machine shaft to stick a piece of reflective tape to use a laser tachometer or make contact with the moving shaft to use a contact tachometer - using a stroboscope you can "stop" the shaft down to 30 RPM (FPM).

Sub windowing

Sudden and rapid temperature changes can be a critical part of certain analysis. The Amprobe LM-120 light meter measures the visible light from fluorescent, metal halide, high-pressure sodium or incandescent sources. It is a portable, easy-to-use digital light meter designed for simple one-hand operation reading in Lumen (lux) or foot candle (fc) units. The High Voltage Detector is a SAFETY DEVICE used to verify that the overhead line is not LIVE prior to earthing. It is suitable for 230V- 440KV supply lines. It is powered by a single 9V battery. The HV Detector is continuous monitoring type i.e. the internal circuit of the equipment is continuously powered by the battery and it keeps monitoring the voltage level at the contact electrode.
